A cabinet meeting held at Singha Durbar on Wednesday decided to appoint Khatiwada, a former governor of Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB), as vice-chairman of the commission, informed Agni Kharel, spokesperson of the government after emerging from the prime minister's office following the meeting.It is for the second time that Khatiwada has been appointed vice-chairman of the commission. He was appointed to the post during the Madhav Kumar Nepal-led government in 2009.
Khatiwada is an expert on monetary policy. During his tenure as governor of NRB, he was credited for taking initiatives for reforms in banking policies and bringing about positive changes. However, some of his decisions were controversial.
Likewise, the meeting decided to dole out one million rupees per family of the police personnel killed in the course of Madhes protests.
The government will provide the amount to the family of policemen Thaman BK, Kashiram Kami and Dev Bahadur Pandey killed during the protest. The meeting also discussed the Madhes protests and fuel crisis among other things, said Kharel.
He said that the government has directed concerned authorities for proper treatment of those injured in Rasuwa district bus accident on Tuesday. In the accident, 35 passengers were killed and at least 52 others were injured.
Pramod Dahal, press advisor to Prime Minister KP Oli, also said that the cabinet has also decided to provide financial assistance for medical treatment of former prime minister Sushil Koirala in the US.
