KATHMANDU, July 3: Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has handed over 4448.2 tons of chemical fertilizers to the government.

Chief Representative of JICA Nepal Tsutomu Shimizu handed over 3,105.1 tons of Urea and 1,343.1 tons of DAP worth 250 million Japanese Yen (approximately Rs 259.00 million) to Uttam Bhattarai, joint secretary at the Ministry of Agriculture Development amid a function on Wednesday.

"The fertilizers will be supplied to 16 remote hilly mountain districts in Nepal where private markets are still few and far between," a press statement issued by JICA said.

Supply of chemical fertilizers in Nepal is still low in comparison to demand. According to MoAD statistics, the supply of Urea met only 22 percent of the total demand in fiscal year 2011/2012 .

"The Government of Japan has been providing fertilizers since late 1970s, hoping that this assistance will further strengthen bilateral relations with Nepal," the statement added.
