KATHMANDU, Feb 7: The government has withheld its plan to introduce the six ordinances introduced earlier in parliament after the Janata Samajbadi Party-Nepal (JSP-N) did not commit its support to the government.
Ruling party leaders said the government backed off from its plan to present the ordinances at the eleventh hour, citing the numerical situation in the National Assembly and pending discussions with the Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP-N). The support of JSP-N, which has three members in the National Assembly, is crucial to endorsing the ordinances.
The agenda to present the ordinances in both the House of Representatives (HoR) and the National Assembly was withheld at the eleventh hour at the instruction of Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli. Minister for Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs Ajay Kumar Chaurasia met with Speaker Devraj Ghimire and conveyed the Prime Minister's message.
Mahesh Bartaula, chief whip of the ruling CPN (UML), said that the ordinances will be tabled in the next meeting.
In the National Assembly, the JSP-N holds a decisive position to ensure a majority for the ruling coalition. However, as the party could not make a concrete decision on Thursday, the ruling parties have decided to table the ordinances in both houses in the next meeting.
Meanwhile, JSP-N Chairman Upendra Yadav has expressed commitment to making a positive decision to support the endorsement of the ordinances.
According to Chairman Yadav’s Personal Secretary Mahesh Chaurasiya, Chairman Yadav has expressed commitment to making a decision on ordinances that serve the interests of the country and people. In a statement on Thursday evening, Chaurasiya said that the attention of the party had been drawn by the false reports related to the party’s decision on ordinances.
Earlier, a committee formed by the JSP-N under the chairmanship of Raj Kishor Yadav had submitted its report on the merits and demerits of the ordinances. Sources said the study committee had noted that the ordinances were largely positive and served the interests of the people and the country.
