KATHMANDU, April 20: Senior leaders of major political parties have said that Khil Raj Regmi should resign as the chairman of the interim election government if he fails to conduct Constituent Assembly (CA) elections in November.

Speaking at Reporters Club on Saturday, UCPN (Maoist) leader Devendra Poudel said that the present government should not be allowed to continue, not even for a single day, if it fails to hold elections in November. [break]

"The government formed to hold Constituent Assembly elections should resign on moral grounds if it fails to conduct one in November," Poudel said.

Accusing the government of trying to prolong stay in power, Poudel asked the parties to create a favorable environment for election rather blame to Election Commission.

CPN-UML leader Raghubir Mahaseth said the government should resign if the country fails to observe CA elections in November despite objections from some parties.

"India held elections despite objections from Naxalites. Kenya too has similar history," Mahaseth said. He, however, stressed that all the dissident parties should participate in elections.

Vice-chairman of Federal Social Party Rakam Chemjong made it clear that his party was not against the CA elections.

"We are in favor of elections. We believe that talks can resolve the differences. We will sit for talks to resolve the present crisis in the country and ensure the elections," Chemjong said.
