KATHMANDU, Sept 23: The government has decided to provide free education up to the bachelor’s level to the families of those killed in the Gen-Z movement and those seriously or critically injured in the protests.
According to the Guidelines for Providing Free Education to Families of Martyrs and the Injured of the Gen-Z Movement, 2083, prepared by the Ministry of Education and Sports, beneficiaries include children and siblings of those killed in the movement, as well as holders of ID cards identifying them as seriously or critically injured.
At the basic level, beneficiaries will receive free education, uniforms and learning materials for grades 1 to 5 and grades 6 to 8, along with cash support through local governments in accordance with prevailing laws, the guidelines state.

At the secondary level, the guidelines provide for uniforms, learning materials and cash support for students in grades 9 and 10 and grades 11 and 12.
Similarly, for studies up to the bachelor’s level, universities are required to reserve a certain quota of scholarships for eligible beneficiaries. Students who are not selected under the quota will be eligible for scholarships with cash support through the University Grants Commission (UGC).
The guidelines stipulate that public schools must include eligible beneficiaries in scholarship quotas provided under existing laws.
Students at the basic and secondary levels must apply to their local government through their school to receive the benefits, while undergraduate students must apply to the UGC through their respective campuses.
According to the guidelines, applications must include the beneficiary ID, citizenship certificate or birth certificate, documents proving the relationship with the martyr, and a recommendation from the institution where the student is enrolled.
The guidelines aim to ensure equal access to education for the families of those killed and injured in the Gen-Z movement and provide educational opportunities from the basic to undergraduate levels.
