Inaugurating the event, Minister for Information and Communications Shankar Pokharel unveiled a CD compilation of Free/Open Source Software titled “Nirvikalpa 2.0” and also launched the group’s revamped website.
This year, SFD was organized in association with High Level Commission for Information Technology (HLCIT), National Information Technology Center (NITC), Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA), D2Hawkeye Services as prime sponsor and supported by Kathmandu University (KU), Madan Puraskar Pustakalaya (MPP), Open Learning Exchange (OLE) Nepal, Prime College, World Link, Digitrust Enterprise, Janaki Technology, and many other ICT stakeholders and FOSS contributors from Nepal and worldwide.
The event also had Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FNCCI) as its celebration partner.
The celebrations were marked by various events including enterprise demo session, FOSS-related documentary shows and presentations, signature campaign and open art.
On the occasion, Minister Pokharel, Vice Chairman of HLCIT Manohar Bhattarai, Chairman of NTA Bhesh Raj Kandel, Executive Director of NITC Dr Subarna Shakya, Vice President of FNCCI Bhaskar Raj Rajkarnikar, senior journalist Kanak Mani Dixit, President of Computer Association of Nepal (CAN) Suresh Karna and President of FOSS Nepal Community Subir Pradhananga shed light on the importance and potential of FOSS in the country´s enterprise sector.
Besides Kathmandu, FOSS Nepal local chapters in Chitwan, Dharan and Pokhara also observed SFD with different events.
This year´s SFD was observed by over 500 volunteer groups in 120 countries across the globe. FOSS Nepal was one of the winners of the Best SFD Event Award selected by www.softwarefreedomday.org for two successive years in 2007 and 2008.
