KATHMANDU, August 5: Nepal Police´s former IGP Pradeep Samsher JB Rana on Monday joined the Sharat Singh Bhandari-led National Madhes Socialist Party (NMSP).

Party Chairman Bhandari welcomed Rana and more than 50 district-level leaders from different parties to his party amidst a function organized in Kathmandu.[break]

Addressing the function, Rana said that he joined the NMSP for the cause of Madhes. Stating that he comes from Madhes, Rana said it his duty to work for the people of Madhes. He claimed that the people of Rautahat district urged him to join national politics.

“The people of this district have assured me of a victory in the elections,” said, Rana claiming, “There is 95 per cent chance of my winning from the constituency number of 4 of Rauthat.” He further said that former bureaucrats should join politics too as “they are clearer on how to give a passage to political crisis.” He stressed that all people born in Madhes are Madhesis no matter whether they of the hill or Tarai origin and that ‘they should work for Madhes’.

Rana maintained that he has played a significant role in the development of Rauthat as he donated his land to a Rauthat based Nepal Police school. “I contributed to the overall infrastructural development of Rauthat,” added Rana.

A corruption case filed by the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority against Rana is sub judice at the Supreme Court. The CIAA had filed a case against him at the Special Court on the charge of accumulating properties disproportionate to his sources of income, while he held the office. But the court gave him a clean chit in the case, prompting the anti-corruption body to appeal at the apex court. However, Rana while responding to journalists claimed that there is no case against him pending at any court across the country.

Bhandari adamant on demands

Bhnadari also reiterated his party´s demand that Chairman of Election Government Khil Raj Regmi should resign as chief justice, the proportional election system should be maintained as that in the last elections, the constituencies should be re-redrawn based on population and unregistered voters´ names should be entered in the new electoral roll.

“To lower the representation of Madhesis by decreasing the number of constituencies in the Tarai is a ploy to further sideline them,” said the party’s Spokesperson Ijhar Mikrani , insisting, “Madhes should have at least 51 percent representation in the new CA as country´s more than half population lives in the Tarai.” General Secretary of the party Rameshwor Shah said claimed that the November poll will be held on the scheduled date of November 19.
