CHITWAN, July 26: Nepali Congress (NC) leader and former Chief of Gandaki Province, Prithvi Man Gurung, has passed away. He was 76.
Family sources said Gurung had been battling cancer for a long time and breathed his last at 8 AM Saturday. Gurung, who also served as the former president of the NC Chitwan, was appointed the Chief of Gandaki Province on July 27, 2021.
A resident of Bharatpur Metropolitan City–26, Gurung also served as the chairperson of the Land Commission in Nawalparasi, according to NC Central Working Committee member Tek Prasad Gurung. During the party's split, he was the district president of the NC (Democratic) led by Sher Bahadur Deuba.
Born in 1949 in Lwangghalel, Machhapuchchhre Rural Municipality of Kaski, Gurung had later settled in Chitwan. He had played an active role in the 1990 People’s Movement as a member of its mobilization committee and had held various positions in the party throughout his career.
As his son is currently abroad, Gurung’s final rites will be performed on Sunday. Of his two sons, the elder had already passed away. He is survived by his younger son and his wife.
