KATHMANDU, July 10: A writ petition was filed at the Supreme Court (SC) on Wednesday against the Election Commission (EC), challenging its move to register the voters without citizenship certificates.

Advocate Purna Chandra Poudel filed the writ, arguing that the EC´s step is against the Interim Constitution.

The EC had recently issued a public notice, to list the voters without citizenship certificates for the November 19 Constituent Assembly (CA) election, on the basis of their names registered for the last polls. [break]

Dubbing the notice as illegal and unconstitutional, Poudel has urged the apex court to annul the step, and to issue an interim order against it. The EC and the prime minister´s office are named as defendants in the writ petition.
