KATHMANDU, June 20: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has urged the authorities concerned to make arrangements for providing citizenship certificates to those staging protests demanding citizenship certificates.
Issuing a statement on Monday, NHRC Spokesperson Dr Tikaram Pokharel said that those staging the protests at Maitighar Mandala in the capital for citizenship certificates should not be deprived of their right to citizenship.
An on-site monitoring by the NHRC found that the people staging the sit-in were entitled to citizenship by birth, so they need to be provided citizenship certificates. He said that the NHRC has also drawn the attention of the government to respect, protect and ensure the right to citizenship, which is associated with all aspects of a person's right to live with dignity.
When will these Nepali citizens get citizenship certificates?
Furthermore, the NHRC has urged the government to take the issue of the identity of a person seriously. It may be noted that 25-year-old Niraj Kamat tried to commit self-immolation on June 13 in order to draw the government’s attention to their demand.
