KATHMANDU, Nov 11: Election Commission (EC) has urged eligible citizens to register their names in the voter list, announcing new operational measures to cope with the surging number of applicants across the country.

The registration deadline ends on November 16.

EC issued a public appeal on Tuesday calling on all citizens who will have reached the age of 18 by March 4, (a day before March 5 election) to ensure their names are included in the voter register.

The Commission, in a bid to efficiently manage the overwhelming flow of applicants and provide smoother service, has decided to operate in two shifts of six hours each, offering 12 hours of daily service in districts where more than 800 registrations are being recorded each day.

EC has deployed 14 additional registration officers from the Department of National ID and Civil Registration to assist with the increased workload in the Kathmandu Valley.

For other districts, the Commission has requested the Ministry of Home Affairs to authorize respective Chief District Officers (CDOs) to mobilize additional staff as needed, based on local demand and service pressure.

The EC emphasized that timely registration is essential to ensure every eligible citizen’s participation in the upcoming elections.

Meanwhile, long queues are seen at the registration centres across the Kathmandu valley. People, after fillingin  the voter list details at the EC website, should go to the centre for photo verification.

Above 200,000 new voters have registered as of Tuesday.
