Over the course of three weeks, she’s been giving us tips on how to make fitness a part of your daily life.[break]
She’s introduced you to Zumba, and for those of you who aren’t able to make the time for it, she’s given easy workout tips that you can do anytime and anywhere. We hope that fitness has, by now, become a way of life for you all.
This week, we’re focusing on the diet aspect of fitness. A proper diet is important not just for weight loss but to maintain a healthy lifestyle. We are what we eat, and so it’s imperative that we eat right and give our body the nutrition it needs.
So, what does eating right mean then? Is it about eating at the proper time? Or is it about eating the right kind of food? What does “eating right” entail? Sujita decodes your health and diet queries and tells you how to eat properly.

Sujita on her eating habits
“Like I’ve said before, I don’t deprive myself. I eat what I want to, but I make sure that I’m not overindulgent,” says Sujita, reiterating what she advises everybody. “I don’t believe in diets. I think dieting for weight loss is a sure-shot way of hampering your nutrition quotients.
You’ll be depriving your body of the right amount of nutrition, and that’s as unhealthy as it can get,” she adds. You have to get the balance right. You have to sometimes give in to your cravings, but you also have to take care that you don’t overindulge yourself.
That’s her, and she’s here to make it simple for you. She shares her top five sure-shot tips that will not only aid you in your weight loss but will also work to keep you healthy and agile.
The importance of breakfast
“I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again – Breakfast should be the meal of the day. Having a hearty breakfast kick-starts your metabolism and this actually helps you burn calories faster. A sluggish metabolism is what makes you gain weight,” says Sujita.
Ensure you have a healthy start. Have a hearty breakfast. Add fruits to up the health quotient of the day.
Eat before you’re hungry
“One way to make sure you don’t overeat is to eat before you’re hungry. Don’t wait till you’re starving because then you’re likely to gorge and go overboard,” shares Sujita.
She advises people to pack lunch or some nuts and fruits and snack on it during the course of the day. That way, our energy levels are on an all-time high. And keep sipping water. Sometimes when we’re dehydrated, thirst can be mistaken for hunger.
Eat at regular intervals
Eating at regular intervals keeps your metabolism active. That way, you burn more calories and store less fat. Nibble on some nuts, or have a fruit break like they do in schools these days. Make sure you don’t have huge portions at one go. But have something every 3-4 hours – a handful of nuts, some yogurt or fruits should do the trick.
Never ever starve yourself
“Never starve yourself. That is perhaps the unhealthiest way to lose weight,” says Sujita who has always despised this insane way of dieting some seem to be fixated on. “Some people seem to go overboard in their goal to lose weight and end up jeopardizing their health,” she adds. Starving will only make your metabolism go on hibernation mode and your body will start storing whatever little you eat. Starvation diets never work.
Indulge occasionally
We all have cravings. It’s human nature. Sometimes it’s that scrumptious looking slice of chocolate cake and sometimes it is pizza.
“When you have a craving, try not to hold back.
But limit the quantity and the frequency. Once a week, a cheese-laden pizza or a huge dollop of ice-cream won’t make you obese,” says Sujita who never holds back when she has a craving. You should give in to your cravings sometimes. You can have anything as long as you control the amount and limit it to once a week.
