Dhading top local supplier of veg to Kalimati market

KATHMANDU July 30: Dhading was the largest vegetables suppliers to the Kathmandu Valley (after India) over the first 10 months of fiscal year 2012/13, according to recent data provided by the Kalimati Fruits and Vegetables Market Development Board (KFVMDB).



The district supplied 17.68 percent of the total vegetables sold through the Kalimati Vegetables Market, officials of the board told Republica. During the period, the district supplied 41,555 tons of vegetables to the Kalimati market. [break]



The market received a total of 235,091 tons of vegetables from different parts of the country as well as various Indian cities during the period.

Dhading, which is regarded as the best supplier of tomato, beans and bitter gourds, supplied 7,560 tons of tomato to the market. During the period, the market received a total of 25,745 tons of tomato.



Similarly, the district supplied 8,533 tons, or 36 percent, of local cauliflower that the Kalimati market received during the period. About 23,152 tons of local cauliflowers were sold through the Kalimati market during the review period.



Similarly, Dhading alone supplied 55 percent of beans consumed by the Kalimati market until mid-April of 2012/13. Out of 4,659 tons of beans that the Kalimati market received, the district supplied a total of 2,588 tons. Similarly, Dhading supplied 58 percent of bitter gourds that the market received during the review period. Of the 4,730 tons of bitter gourds that the market received, 2,752 tons came from Dhading.



Kavre stood second in the list, supplying 28,370 tons, or 12.07 percent, of the vegetables consumed by the Kalimati market in the review period. The district supplied 4,940 tons of tomato and 334 tons of beans to the Kalimati market.



Likewise, Makwanpur came third in the list with 19,618 tons, or 8.35 per cent, of total vegetable supplies that the Kalimati market received during the review period. The district supplied 7,514 tons of cauliflower and 4,657 tons of cabbage to the Kalimati market.



Apart from these districts, Kalimati market received vegetables from Kathmandu itself, Chitwan, Sarlahi and Jhapa, among other districts.

Though Nepal heavily depends on India for vegetable supplies, officials say the share of Indian supplies in decreasing with each passing year. Supplies from India went down by 4 percentage points to 24.76 percent during the review period, according to the officials.
