DOTI, May 17: Deer are being killed on daily basis in and around Tele hill, Mahabharat jungle and Khaptad National Park area in Doti.

In the absence of enough forest officials, poaching of deer is on the rise. Locals said more than 150 deer have been killed within the past one month in those areas. [break]

A local, Ram Hari Jora, said the highest number of deer have been killed in Tele hill. Though poaching is illegal, around three dozens of deer have been killed in Tele forest alone, according to the locals.

As the trees shed leaves and jungles wear a deserted look in the month of Baishakh, the wild animal can be seen easily from a distance, making the poachers easier to target the animals.

Poachers use home-made guns to kill deer. Many villagers here own firearms without licenses.

Deer are being killed in broad daylight in southern Doti -- Dharkamandau, Sathphari, Chabarachautara, Simchaur, Kanachaur, Kedarakhada, Ghanghal, Bachen, Lanakedeshwar, Mannakapadi, Laxminagar, Saraswatinagar, Ghanteshwar, Kapaliki -- and Baglekh, Dauda, Taleni, Khatiwada and the forest bordering the Khaptad park in the north.

Similarly, deer poaching is also on the rise in Afare Manan, Maidan, Silgadhi, Budur and Gaira, the locals said.

Raw and dried meat of deer killed in these areas is openly sold in Dipayal, Budur, Gaira and some other places.

“There are numerous police and forest posts on the way. But poachers carrying guns go to the jungles for hunting and return with the kill right under the nose of these authorities,” said a local of Saraswatinagar-7, Jhapat Jora.
