Cricket was included in the national games ever since its inception in 2038 BS. It continued to be featured in the National games until 2053 when it was dropped in the Fourth National 2053 games held at Nepalgunj.
The national games feature participants competing under different development regions of Nepal along with the teams from the Nepal Police, Armed Police Force and the Nepal Army.
However, Cricket Association of Nepal has been organizing the national cricket tournament with 6 participating regions( Biratnagar, Birgunj, Kathmandu, Bhairahawa, Nepalgunj and Baitadi) since 2061. This system is to receive continuity in the upcoming fifth national games.
Jivan Ram Shrestha, General Secretary of National Sports Council (NSC) said that as CAN has been organizing cricket in Nepal, NSC has given a nod to the CAN to hold the competition for the games the way it has been doing.
"We have had six regions competing in the nationals so that maximum number of players get the chance to be selected for the national side in coming days. But as this will affect the medals tally, we are including cricket only as a promotional sport."
