A joint patrol of Nepal Police and Armed Police Force (APF) found a sack full of arms and ammunition left by the side of the Tirou Baba temple. The seized weapons include three pistols, a 12-bore gun, and bullets.
Chief of Border Security Office SP Bharat Paneru of APF claimed that it was the first time in eastern Tarai that arms and ammunition were seized in such large quantity. Police said armed groups could have brought in the weapons.
"It would have been dangerous had the weapons reached the hands of criminals," added Paneru.
The weapons could have been imported through the Kunouli entry point of the Saptari district, police said. Out of three pistols seized, two were automatic ones.
