The announcement was made amidst a function organized to distribute track-suits to the karate team selected for the Asiad.[break] SKIF coach Niwas Gopal Baidhya said the association would award cash prizes worth Rs 100,000 Rs 50,000 and Rs 25,000 respectively to gold, silver and bronze medal winners.
National Sports Council (NSC) treasurer Min Krishna Maharjan gave away track-suits to the members of the karate team and also thanked SKIF for their support to the players. He said that the government had not paid enough attention for players´ welfare.
"Sports is the only means of introducing Nepal in international arena. Argentina and Brazil are known in the world for their football and footballers," Maharajan said adding, "We could also produce such players in Nepal but NSC has not been able to take steps in that direction due to the government´s neglect of sports sector."
Meanwhile, SKIF Vice-president Narendra Prasad Shrestha wished success for the Nepali karate team to participate in Asiad.
The track-suits were distributed to eight players and three coaches.
Lig Lige race on Tuesday
Lig Ligkot Development Expedition is organizing the Lig Lige Race on Tuesday in Gorkha.
The race is being organized in a bid to promote tourism in the country through sports, said Sanjiv Rana, the president of expedition amidst a press conference in the capital on Sunday.
According to the organizers, the 10-km race will feature more than 60 athletes from across the nation, including athletes from the Nepal Police, Nepal Army and Armed Police Force.
The race will begin from Palungtar and finish at Anppeepal. The top three players of the race will bag a purse of Rs 50,000, Rs 10,000 and Rs 5,000 respectively along with shields and certificates.
Bhaktapur players dominate youth rating chess
Chess players of Bhaktapur dominated the sixth and seventh rounds of the First National Youth of Nation Rating Chess Tournament on Sunday. Veteran chess player Ganesh Man Duwal, Madan Krishna Kayastha and Balaram Napit from Bhaktapur and Uttam Raj Thapa from Tanahun are jointly leading the table with six points each at the end of the fourth day of the tournament being held at the Khwapring School, Bhaktapur.
Duwal defeated another veteran Rajendra Prasad Shrestha in the sixth round but drew with Thapa in the seventh round. Thapa, meanwhile, defeated Shyam Shrestha to maintain the lead. Kayastha put up a good performance winning both the matches. He defeated Rajaram Duwal and five times Nepal champion Nabin Tandukar in the sixth and seventh rounds respectively. Napit shared half a point with Niraj Niraula after a draw and defeated Kamal Shrestha in another round.
Rupesh Jaiswal, Rajendra Prasad Shrestha, Niraj Niraula and Shyam Shrestha are jointly in the second position with 5.5 points each. Jaiswal defeated Nepal champion Badri Lal Nepali. Likewise, Niraula defeated Bijay Dangol while Shyam Shrestha beat Milan Roka to secure the second position.
Herakaji Maharjan, FIDE Master Manish Hamal, Nabin Tandukar, Kamal Shrestha, Hari Chandra Chaulagain, Shree Krishna Prajapati are trailing behind at the third spot with five points each.
