KATHMANDU, July 26: The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) has seized documents from Bishal Bazaar Company Limited to investigate into possible irregularities in the decision to rent out shops.

Hearing on a case in this connection, the Supreme Court had around three years ago ordered the company to abide by the existing legal provisions and make the renting process transparent.

"The commission has seized Bishal Bazar Company´s original documents for investigation suspecting irregularities while renting out the shops," said a statement issued by CIAA spokesman Shreedhar Sapkota Friday. [break]

The statement said that on August 30, 2010, the Supreme Court had ordered the company to transfer the ownership of the land occupied by the company building to the government as it is public land. "But the Supreme Court order hasn´t been implemented so far," it said.

The CIAA has said that its preliminary investigation showed that the company has rented out its 346 shops at very low prices and also didn´t follow the Public Procurement Act. According to the CIAA, the company is suffering huge losses as the shops have been provided at cheaper rates to certain individuals.

Also, the anti-corruption body has begun investigation into the construction of the buildings on 22 ropanis of public land at Gongabu Bus Terminal.
