Bhattarai leads Day I

KATHMANDU, May 17: Sachin Bhatarai of Royal Nepal Golf Club registered a card of even par 72 to take a one-stroke lead after the first round of Ghana´s Open Golf Tournament here at the Tribhuvan Army Officers Golf Club on Monday.



On the day when the top pros failed to perform, three golfers -- No 1 Rabi Khadka, Jaya Ram Shrestha and Surya Sharma -- were tied for the second position at one-over 73. [break]



Home Club pro Dhana Thapa was fifth at two-over 74. Tied for sixth at three-over 75 were former No 1 Shiva Ram Shrestha, Deepak Neupane and Rajan Thapa. Pashupati Sharma and Sanjay Lama shared the ninth position each with a score of 76. Deepak Acharya was 11th at five-over 77.



A total of 36 players -- 25 pros and 11 amateurs -- are taking part in the second event of the Surya Nepal Golf Tour sponsored by Ghana Shyam Thapa, former president of Nepal PGA and the first professional golfer of Nepal. The event will be played over 72 holes and the cut will be applied after the second round.



Out of the total cash prize of Rs 300,000, the top three pros will receive Rs 60,000, Rs 40,000 and Rs 30,000 respectively.
