KATHMANDU, March 12: Tribhuvan University (TU) is preparing to phase out subjects taught under the annual examination system as part of its policy to update and modernize the academic structure.

According to TU, a decision has been made to discontinue annual-system programs such as BBS, BA, BEd and BSc. Vice Chancellor Deepak Aryal said that old students will be allowed to sit for a one-time chance examination by the end of mid-July so that they can complete their academic qualifications and obtain certificates.

“At the undergraduate level, admissions under the annual system for Food and Technology have already been stopped from the current academic year,” Aryal said. “In recent years, programs such as BBS, BA, BEd, BSc and the three-year law program have lost much of their appeal, so the university has decided to provide a chance examination for old students.”

According to him, TU is gradually implementing academic systems in line with global market demands, and annual-system programs will be discontinued in the coming days.

Assistant Controller of Examinations at TU, Suryakant Kalauni, said the university has been providing chance examinations to old students since 2001. Around 4,000 postgraduate students completed all their examinations during the previous months of mid-June to mid-August.

According to him, for the old batches under the three-year bachelor’s programs, the third-year examinations concluded on February 25. “The second-year examinations of the three-year bachelor’s programs will begin from March 16, while the first-year examinations will start from May,” Kalauni said. “For the four-year bachelor’s programs, examinations for the fourth, third and second years have already been completed, while the first-year examination will begin from mid-May.”

He said the examinations for old students have been slightly delayed as the university’s regular examinations will run from April 8 to May 8.

“We found that many students who had enrolled earlier had not completed their academic levels and their studies remained pending. Therefore, the university has decided to provide a chance examination so that these old students can complete their academic qualifications,” he said. “Since the number of students in the undergraduate law faculty is very small, examinations for some levels could not be conducted. However, examinations for around a thousand such students will also be completed by mid-July.”

For the academic year 2024/25, the university has included mainly BA under humanities, BBS under management, BEd under education, BSc under science and technology, and programs under the law faculty in this chance examination scheme. According to Kalauni, students from these faculties under the old annual system have been given a one-time opportunity.

Earlier, TU had also provided similar examination opportunities to old BA, BBS, BEd and BSc students in the academic years 2011/2012, 2016/17 and 2021/22.

Kalauni said the current chance examination also includes students who had enrolled more than 20 years ago. “Students from many faculties have been given this opportunity through a single decision,” he said. “Around 50,000 students are sitting for the examinations. All examinations for old batches will be completed by mid-July.”

According to him, the semester system is more expensive than the annual system because the annual system conducts only four examinations, while the semester system requires eight examinations as it operates on a six-month cycle.
