KATHMANDU, June 13: At a time when the government is preparing to announce date for fresh Constituent Assembly (CA) election after finalizing the election related ordinance, various agitating parties, including the Mohan Baidya-led CPN-Maoist, Upendra Yadav-led Federal Democratic Forum (FDF) and Ashok Rai-led Federal Socialist Party have announced to jointly launch protest if their demands are not met.

At a press conference jointly organized by the agitating parties in the capital on Thursday, they accused the government of trying to announce election date without showing any positive gesture for talks with the disgruntled parties. They also warned that the government would be held responsible for the consequences if the election is held without addressing their concerns. [break]

CPN-Maoist Chairman Baidya said they decided to organize a press conference to make the government aware of their demands. “The government has not paid any heed to our demands. The government will be held responsible for the consequences if the election process moves ahead without our demands being met,” warned Baidya.

He also ruled out possibility of fresh CA election in November. “There is no possibility of fresh CA election in November. Announcing the poll date without political consensus could invite problems for the country. We will effectively boycott the CA polls, if our demands are not addressed,” he said.

Baidya, however, did not clarify about the nature of their protest. The agitating parties have been demanding dissolution of the Regmi-led poll government and formation of a government led by political parties.

The agitating parties have issued the warning after the High Level Political Committee handed over the responsibility of settling poll related issues and announcement of poll date to the government.

General Secretary of Federal Socialist Party Rajendra Shrestha said his party would not accept an ordinance forwarded by the “four-party syndicate”. “If the government does not address the demands of the agitating parties, we would be forced to jointly announce protests,” he said.

Shrestha accused Chief Justice Khil Raj Regmi, who heads the Interim Election Council of Ministers, of being undemocratic and unconstitutional. He further clarified that the CJ Regmi- led government was just working as an agent of the four-party syndicate.

Chairman of Federal Socialist Party Ashok Rai said the 11-point agreement between the four parties is unconstitutional. “The so-called consensus on 11-point political agreement and 25-point ordinance on removing constitutional difficulties is meaningless,” he said.

Arguing that it was just like an autocratic process, Rai flayed the government´s attempt to remove constitutional hurdles through amendments.

Spokesperson of FDF Parshuram Tamang said they sat for talks with the government for three times but there was no agreement. “We support the Mohan Baidya-led alliance and will jointly launch the protests,” he said. Tamang claimed that the government was ignoring the voices of the marginalized communities by ignoring the protesting parties.

The 33-party alliance led by Baidya, eight-party alliance led by Yadav and Ashok Rai-led Federal Socialist Party are protesting against the government, accusing it of being undemocratic and inconsiderate to their demands.

Chairman of Federal Socialist Party Ashok Rai said Baidya-led alliance commands the support of all the agitating 42 parties.
