KATHMANDU, Sept 20: The Parliamentary Hearing Special Committee (PHSC) on Sunday confirmed the nominations of Gyan Chandra Acharya and Praddhumna Bikram Shah as Permanent Representative to the United Nations and Ambassador to Brazil respectively. The committee unanimously confirmed the nominations.

Earlier, replying to the queries of the lawmakers, Archarya said that he would lobby for the interests of the country in the global body after his appointment. He said he would advocate for the rights of landlocked country, and push for increasing the number of troops in the UN peace keeping missions worldwide.

Acharya opined that the country should speed up the peace process, empower the existing Join Mechanism Coordination Committee (JMCC), and bid adieu to United Missions in Nepal (UNMIN). He was also of the view that Nepal should take initiatives for the repatriation of the Bhutanese refugees if they so desire.

Similarly, Shah said he would try to explore fields of common interests between Nepal and Brazil after his appointment. “As Brazil enjoys good relations with India, it can easily sell electricity to the latter. So it is interested to make investment in hydropower in Nepal,” he said. He said that he would also look for employment opportunities for Nepali youths in Brazil.

Madhesi People´s Rights Forum, Tarai Madhes Democratic Party, Dalit Janajati Party, and Sanghiya Loktantrik Rastriya Manch boycotted the hearing saying that the appointment was not inclusive of the people living in the Tarai.
