According to SSP Puskar Karki, chief of the division, the squad had followed Sherpa after they were tipped-off by a special source. Sherpa, who hails from Fulping Katti in Sindhupalchowk, was sentenced to 15 years in jail and slapped a fine of Rs 500,000 for smuggling brown sugar. He had been serving his term at the Dillibazar jail since October 8, 2012.DSP Ramesh Thapa of the crime division informed that Sherpa travelled to various districts and did not stay in one place for more than two-three days. He had shortened his hair and wore masks to conceal his identity.
Sherpa had managed to reach his rented room to meet his wife in Bauddha while he was taken to Tripureshwar based eye hospital. But he had escaped with handcuffs from the rented room where he had offered lunch to constables deployed for his security.
The Metropolitan Police Commissioner Office had formed a four-member team led by SSP Suresh Bikram Shah to investigate the incident. The team found that the police constables on duty had helped the inmate to flee.
Head Constable Sikendra Yadav, constables Karan Mahat and Khemraj Pangeni deployed for Sherpa's security were suspended after being found guilty.
Around 51 inmates serving terms for heinous crimes have escaped prison in the last 11 years, while only half of them were rearrested, according to the records issued by Department of Prison Management.
