CHITWAN, June 30: The prison office in Chitwan has been on high alert following the death of an inmate due to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) infection. According to Kamal Prasad Kafle, head of the prison, precautionary measures have been taken following the death of the inmate who was brought from Nawalpur on June 28.
Following the incident, health check-ups of 22 prisoners in quarantine were carried out and attention is being paid to their basic needs. “There are no signs of any problems at the moment, but we are taking precautionary measures just in case,” Kafle said.

Also, access to telephone services for inmates has been revoked following the incident. As stated by Kafle, precautions have been taken due to the high number of inmates in the prison. There are currently 674 prisoners in the Chitwan prison.
In addition, a separate kitchen has been arranged for inmates in quarantine due to the risk of COVID-19 infection among the prisoners. According to Kafle, patients needing regular hospital visits are also being kept inside the quarantine ward of the prison.
The prison has the capacity to hold 25 females and 255 males at a time. However, there are 51 females and 623 males imprisoned there.
