SAPTARI, Sept 2: Over 200 households of Odraha VDC have been inundated after the Triyuga River breached its embankments following torrential rainfall. The floodwater also destroyed hundreds of bighas of paddy fields.

According to Fattepur police, the flooded river swept away over two hundred houses in ward no 1,2,3,4 and 5 of the VDC. The water began entering the village at around 6 in the morning. “When I woke up I saw flood entering the village. But before I could warn the villagers the flood has already swept away the entire settlement,” said Biso Paswan, a local.[break]

According to Krishna Narayan Thakur, a local, the flood destroyed around 100 bighas of paddy fields. “The paddy harvest would have been ready in a few weeks,” rued Thakur.

According to Irrigation Management Division (IMD), continuous rainfall had led to flood in the river. “We have not had such rainfall for the last three years,” said engineer at IMD Ramesh Kumar Chaudhari.

The locals have accused the government of not making a timely intervention to contain the river. “As the river flows through the border of Saptari and Udayapur districts, the local administration has been passing the buck to one another. This has made us suffer,” said Kamal Narayan Chaudhari , a local.
