HELAMBU, June 11: Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai visited the site of the Melamchi Drinking Water Project in Sindhupalchowk district on Monday and ordered the authorities concerned and the contractor to complete the Melamchi Drinking Water Project in the earliest.

Venting discontent over the protracted delay in the construction of the project, he warned that in case of further delay the authorities and contractors concerned would be held responsible.[break]

Talking to journalists, he said that he was not at all satisfied with the progress at the project.

Bhattarai said that a separate mechanism would be formed to expedite the project, which has been categorized as "national pride" project.

“The mechanism will directly monitor the progress of the project and help resolve problems,” he said. “People in the capital have been thirsty for years so I am not here to just see the project site.”

He assured that the locals would get due benefits from the project and stressed that they should not obstruct the project in any way.

PM was accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister Narayankaji Shrestha and other high-ranking government officials.

No political interference in Upper Tamakoshi

Later in the day, the prime minister visited the site of 456 MW Upper Tamakoshi Hydropower Project at Lamagabar in Dolakha district and assured that there will be no political intereference in the project. He inquired extensively about the progress in the project.

Construction works appeared to have ceased in some parts of the project due to shortage of diesel. The prime minister also assured smooth supply of diesel for the project.
