KATHMANDU, Nov 19: The government spent Rs 54.46 billion to settle its debt, which was almost double of the amount spent in development projects in the first four months of the current fiscal year.

Mostly politicians sell dreams of big projects during elections, budget speeches and other occasions. Such promises often complicate situation as the leaders make lofty promises without doing even basic study on such projects.

The government tabled a budget of Rs 1.533 trillion for the upcoming fiscal year 2019/20. This budget seemed to be of distributive in nature due to announcements like raise in hand-outs to elderly citizens, salary hike to government employees and direct funds to lawmakers for development projects in their constituencies.

Multiple delays, multiple deadline extensions, multiple irregularities and negligence are perhaps what characterize our multi-billion rupees development projects—including the national pride ones on which Nepal exclusively relies to achieve its development goals. This laxity and non-action on national pride projects will cost us dearly—both in terms of economy and the benefits people are supposed to derive from their completion. As Republica has found out, only seven out of 21 national pride projects have achieved 50 percent or more progress although their completion deadlines are inching closer.
