TAPLEJUNG, Sept 11: The Himalayan region of Taplejung, too, has witnessed protests against the government’s preparation to endorse the American Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) agreement. Youth activists were seen hoisting the national flag and staging protests against the MCC project in Phungling Municipality on Saturday.
Youths were seen holding placards with slogans such as ‘We don't want MCC, Act of Treason is not allowed’ and ‘Go back America’ written on them.
MCC is currently operational in 34 nations in Africa, Latin America and Asia. An agreement was signed by the then Finance Minister Gyanendra Bahadur Karki to implement MCC for the construction of a 318 km long 400KV transmission line, a 300 km long highway and other projects with a grant of $500 million in 2017.
