Binod Yadav, 22, of Dhalkebar-3 was detained by police at 1 am Friday on the charge of stealing from a shop. Yadav was drunk at that time and was taken to the Area Police Office, Dhalkebar. [break]
Police maintain that Yadav hung himself with a rope around his neck but his relatives claim police hung him up after killing him. Police inspector at Dhalkebar office Shyam Krishna KC says Yadav committed suicide when process was under way to release him. Yadav had taken food at the police station at 11 on Friday morning.
Police claim that Yadav, who was the only detainee in the room, opened his vest and hung himself with a loop on the beam of roof. But Yadav´s knees were found touching the floor while still suspended on the loop on Saturday. Looking at the body, it looks like the body was hung after killing but investigation have not been done.
The locals had blocked the road and started raising slogans immediately after the incident on Friday. DSP Uma Prasad Chaturvedi reached Dhalkebar from district headquarter to ease tension but the locals demanded that they would sit for talks only in the presence of the chief district officer (CDO).
Additional force was mobilized after protests started early on Saturday morning. A meeting was held in the presence of assistant CDO Balabhadra Giri Saturday morning where relatives of Yadav demanded Rs 2 million in compensation.
The police had to resort to firing tear gas shells and baton charge after irate locals again started to block the road. Eight locals were injured.
The situation came under control after the third round of meeting late Saturday evening which decided to form an investigation committee under district attorney, punish the guilty policemen, write to the government to provide a compensation of Rs 1 million to the victim´s family and provide Rs 25,000 immediately for funeral.
