‘You need to work hard to get recognized’

Shriya Shrestha, 22, is a freelance makeup artist. She has been in the business for the past one and half years, doing various kinds of makeup, including bridal to professional photo shoots. What inspired you to get involved in the makeup industry?

I was interested in makeup from a very young age. I used to even do makeup for my cousins for their school events. Gradually, I started to watch YouTube videos of makeup vloggers from all around the world, and wanted to give it a try and pursue a career in this field.

What is the minimum qualification or training required to become a makeup artist?

If you have the capability, you don’t need training. You can easily learn the art through YouTube tutorials, but to become a certified professional you need to be trained. The time period of the training also differs from the type of makeup you want to learn. I took training for two months from Poonam Makeup Artistry. Although not mandatory, training will help you learn many things and build your confidence in your art.


What are the challenges of being a makeup artist in Nepal?

Makeup business in Nepal is definitely growing, but people usually prefer to do their makeup from famous makeup artists. This makes is it difficult for budding artists. You need to work really hard to get recognized in this business.



How is the scope of makeup business in Nepal?

Since the fashion industry is booming in Nepal, the scope of makeup business is increasing by the day. But before joining the makeup business, people need to hone their own talent. You need to have connection and links to sustain in this industry.


What advice would you give to young generation who would want to pursue a career in the makeup industry?

You need to be confident in your craft and give 100 percent to whatever you are doing, whether you are doing makeup for small events or professional photo shoots.
