KATHMANDU, July 31: Upendra Yadav has been elected as the parliamentary party (PP) leader of Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP).
A parliamentary party meeting of the JSP held at its parliamentary party office in Singha Durbar on Saturday unanimously elected the party’s Chairman Yadav as its parliamentary party leader. Federal Council Chairman Baburam Bhattarai had proposed his name for the post of PP leader, while Mahendra Raya Yadav seconded Bhattarai’s proposal.

A total of 21 lawmakers of the JSP were present in the meeting. The party had initially 34 lawmakers in the federal parliament. While two lawmakers are currently under suspension, 11 JSP lawmakers are with the Mahantha Thakur-led faction of the party.
The decision of the JSP to elect Yadav as its PP leader comes a few days after the Election Commission granted official recognition to the Yadav-led faction of the JSP. The rival faction-led by Thakur, however, has decided to challenge the EC’s decision at the Supreme Court.
JSP, a coalition partner in the Sher Bahadur Deuba-led Cabinet, is preparing to join the Deuba-led government. Party insiders said the party will be led by Chairman Yadav in the Deuba-led cabinet.
