KATHMANDU, Feb 15: A distinguished and well known Nepali writer Taranath Sharma has passed away. He died at the age of 87 on Tuesday morning.
Sharma, who was suffering from dementia for a long time, also had various health related problems including heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes.
His last rites will be performed at Pashupati Aryaghat on Tuesday afternoon. Sharma has two sons and a wife.
Sharma, who was born on the day of Nirjala Ekadashi on June 23, 1934 in Barbote, Ilam, had started his education studying Sanskrit.
While studying in Benaras in 2013 BS, he started a radical movement in collaboration with Ballabhmani Dahal, Bal Krishna Pokhrel and others. He is credited with giving the Nepali language a radical identity and popularizing Nepali subjective essay writing. Sharma had won the Madan Puraskar in 2026 BS for his collection of essays Belayat tira Baralinda.
Sharma, author of travel collections of travelogs such as Belayet tira Baralinda and Patal Pravas, published more than 100 books in Nepali, English including language and grammar.
