World Golf Cup qualifiers from May 12

KATHMANDU, May 5: The sixth edition of the qualifiers for the Amateur Turkish Airlines World Golf Cup will start from May 12 at the Gokarna Golf Course in Kathmandu. 

Senior Golf Director at the Gokarna Forest Resort Deepak Acharya, at a press meet in Kathmandu on Friday,  said that around 100 golfers will take part in the tournament who will be divided into two categories—amateur and corporate players. 

The net winner of the tournament will qualify to the World Golf Course which will be played in Turkey in November. Likewise, the gross and leg winners will also be prized in the tournament which will be played in ¾ stableford handicap format.  A total of 10 players will feature from the Royal Nepal Golf Club (RNGC), while the other players will be from Dharan, Pokhara, among other district golf courses. The players will feature in men’s, women’s and age categories. 

The Turkish Airlines Nepal GM Abdullah Tuncer Kececi said that he is excited for the tournament and added that golf is important from the tourism perspective as well. 

“I’m already excited of how the tournament will kick off in Nepal. Nepal is more than just mountains and this tournament will give a strong message that Nepal is a golf destination as well. It will promote gold tourism,’’ said Kececi. 

Bhairaja Pandey, executive member at the golf course, thanked Kececi for his active promotion of golf in Nepal.  “Kececi has been actively promoting tourism in Nepal and has emphasized that Nepal is not only about selling mountains. It is equally important in golf and has been an advantage for youngsters and is more accessible to them,’’ Pandey said adding, “This encourages youngsters.’’ 
Acharya described Nepal’s participation in this tournament as a big achievement and hoped Nepal will show good performance in the tournament.
