KATHMANDU, August 31: Speakers attending an event here today have stressed that political parties should field women candidates for the post of mayor and chief in the third phase of local elections to be held in the province no 2 on September 18.

At a workshop organized by Jagaran Nepal, they also lamented that the women candidates were restricted just to the Vice-Chair and Deputy-Mayor positions in the first and the second round of local level elections.

Kathmandu Metropolitan City Deputy Mayor Hari Prabha Khadgi urged the leaders of the political parties to file candidacies of women for the posts of mayor and chair for the local level units in the September 18 elections.

Deputy-Mayor Khadgi argued," None is granting you right by asking. You should struggle for it. Women should be united among themselves for advancing gender equality. "

"Women also should prepare and groom themselves for assuming leadership in another local level election to be held five years later," she asserted.

Also, speaking at the program, Dipayal Municipality's Mayor Manju Marasini stressed on the practical implementation of the equal participation of women in all apparatus of the State, including at policy level.

The new constitution has incorporated provision for the women for their representation at all level of the State based on the principle of proportional representation.
Jagaran Nepal Chairperson Samjhana Pokharel, women rights activists Sharmila Karki and Lily Thapa univocally pressed for unity among the women for ensuring rights for womankind. RSS
