WIC, this year, was a tribute to Vidhea Shrestha, a core member of WIC who passed away last year. A tribute video kicked off the event and the crowd increased in numbers as the evening set in.[break]
The concert saw some young and promising girls who are sure to take the Nepali music industry to a whole new different level and make us proud. However, all the newbie’s including the ones who have performed at WIC before, seemed very immaculately frozen on stage. The crowd cheered on as they sung ignoring the fact that they lacked energy and the stage presence could not be felt. May be the drinks were doing the magic!
But things changed a bit when 17 year-old Regina Chettri wooed the crowd with her powerful voice when she sang Piece Of My Heart, a classic by Janis Joplin. Any music lover will love a Janis Joplin song, any time of the day, but Regina added her flavor to the song and she’s definitely the new talent to look out for.
But not all young girls were all smiles. Some young performers who performed at WIC this year didn’t seem happy, because of the last moment changes in the line up of performers and not having enough time to practice.
Preeti Kaur and Shreya Sotang performed up to the mark but again the much needed energy was missing. However, hearing Ciney Gurung do a jazz number came up as a complete surprise to the audience but hearing her do a complete opposite of what she does, was interesting. Why doesn’t WIC try out different things like this instead of asking singers to sing popular songs that have made it big in the international charts?
Abhaya Subba Weise’s performance was worth applauding and cheering as she sung a medley of her original numbers and Michael Jackson’s songs. But the sound totally ruined it when the music totally sidelined her voice through out the performance. May be the open air venue is to be blamed for it but this should have been dealt with during the sound check. At least the vocals should have been audible. And the piano, through out the show, was a huge turn off or just too loud but hats off to Abhaya for covering it up pretty well.
The “commercial” breaks in-between too was a total turn off. Just when people would start to enjoy and sway to the music, there was a “commercial” break. If you just saw the screen, it actually felt like watching the LIVE Hits FM Music Awards with “commercial” breaks. “Music for a cause” looks like is going commercial with the increment in people coming in every year and as the concert gains the “must attend concert” title.
The concert ended with the ladies behind WIC, Sheri Thapa, Palmo Khampa, Rachana Gurung Sharma, Abhaya Subba Weise along with Preeti Kaur, perform Whitney Houston’s I’m Every Women and a medley of songs.
Women In Concert, as a whole event, looked perfect but, like any other event, it had its loopholes and there’s always a next time to clear things out.
