The woman, (whose name has been withheld), was taken out of her relative´s house in neighboring Laltol-- where she had gone to stay following a minor altercation with her husband -- by four youths and gang raped.[break] The local leaders tried to keep the matter under wraps for three days which led to the loss of evidence.
“The four came to the relative´s house at night and asked me to return home. As they were close acquaintances I went with them but they gagged me and started raping me once we crossed the local Kataniya river,” the victim said in a statement to the police.
Chief of Siraha Police Ramesh Bhattarai said the police rescued the woman Wednesday after learning about the incident. The victim was immediately taken to a nursing home in Mirchaiya for primary treatment.
“However, necessary evidence to establish the crime was lost as she was brought more than 48 hours after the incident,” Dr Javed Akhtar at the nursing home said. He, however, added that external physical injuries show that she was physically assaulted.
She was later taken to Sagarmatha Zonal Hospital, but the doctors failed to find conclusive evidence of rape.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Bhattarai said police have been deployed to arrest the offenders based on her statement. The four accused are at large.
The woman is in a critical condition and currently undergoing treatment at the BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences.
