A huge staircase next to the parking lot past Big Mart at Lazimpat will lead you to Hemingway’s Bar & Cafe that has been catering scrumptious food for the last three years. The entrance will take you directly to the terrace which is a pleasant escape from the clamor of the streets.

You can choose to stay on the terrace if you prefer open-air while you drink and dine. But there’s also ample space indoors that looks both hip and welcoming.

The first thing that will catch your eyes at Hemingway’s are the walls, neatly decked with pictures of Ernest Hemingway, the American author and journalist who produced classic literary works. The pictures bring the acclaimed writer’s history vividly to life.[break]

There are several chains of bars abroad under the name of Hemingway, and the owners too wanted to bring back the same kind of aura back here in Kathmandu. So the credit behind the ambience and name of this place goes to Hemingway, the man who has inspired many writers and thinkers alike.

The other thing that you wouldn’t fail to notice is the way Andy Warhol’s pictures along with his famous quotes are splattered on the walls. Warhol, the leading figure in the visual art movement called Pop Art, and Hemingway both represent creativity, and the décor of this place justifies that.

The place isn’t so huge but big enough to accommodate a lot of people, and it’s been designed in such a way that you can have your own private space too. The rest of the furnishings have been kept simple with wooden chairs and low couches that perfectly match the casual ambience of the place where you can just chill with a drink or two. A posh setting would definitely not have lent the kind of vibe the place has now.

One of the main specialties of the place is its full-fledged bar where you can just sit around and drink. To start off, there are varieties of drinks you can try out here. If you are a fan of cocktails, you wouldn’t want to miss the Red Bikini and the Nanga Parbat. The names themselves are unique, but more than the name, the drinks are perfectly blended which will leave you craving for a refill. The place is planning to add a whole series of new cocktails all named after the tall mountains of Nepal.

If you’re a teetotaler or not in the mood for alcoholic drinks, you don’t need to fret, however, as you can try their amazing mocktails, like the usual Cinderella, Virgin Mary, fruit punches, to name just a few.

As you sip the drinks, you can turn on the pages of the menu and decide what you would like to munch on. It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that all food items available at Hemingway’s are scrumptious and worth a try. They have neatly prepared the menu which separates vegetarian and the non-veg dishes. For starters, if you are a vegetarian, you can try their veg cutlets, tofu chilli, alu zeera, baby corn chilli, mushroom chilli, paneer pakoda or cheese balls.

If you are a fan of chicken delicacies, then you can try the chicken sadeko, chicken wings, chicken drumsticks or chicken fried wonton that the chef scrupulously prepares without leaving any rooms for complaints.

If you are here, even though it’s a common Kathmandu dish, you shouldn’t miss the C Momo because unlike many places where C momos are fried and then dipped into red sauce, the ones here are steamed and mixed with just the right amount of tanginess and sweetness that will surely entice your taste buds.

The other scrumptious dish is meat balls served with mashed potatoes that’s both soft and juicy.

For main courses, you can try their hot garlic prawn, mafu tofu served with minced meat, Szechwan chicken, among the many other options that they serve.

Besides the foods, they have good service at Hemingway. The owners too are often found at the place and are seen committed to delivering excellent dining and drinking experience at their place.

The best part of Hemingway’s is that you can just chill, drink and dine while you enjoy the cool numbers that they play in the background. It’s also the right place if you want to catch up with your pending conversations or if you just need an excuse to give in to good times.

The place also serves special BBQ on Saturdays and Sundays.
