The wild elephant entered the breeding center Tuesday evening and refused to leave. Staffers at the breeding center are worried because the wild elephant prevented the female elephants from leaving the breeding center for grazing throughout Wednesday, said Ram Ekbal Chowdhary, who looks after elephants at the breeding center.
Efforts by breeding center staffers and villagers to remove the wild elephant from the center were unsuccessful Wednesday. They have sought help from a team, including veterinary doctor Kamal Gaire, to deal with the problem.
The breeding center plans to remove the wild elephant Thursday by injecting it with sedatives after the team arrives.
“The wild elephant is not leaving the center because this is the tuskers’ mating season,” said Baburam Gopali, warden at the breeding center.
Wild elephants have been troubling people living in nearby villages for a week now. Earlier this week, the villagers blocked the Amlekhgunj section of Mahendra Highway demanding compensation for damages to their property inflicted by the elephants.
