Why the Madheshi Commission removed Muslims and Tharus from the list of Madheshis

KATHMANDU, Dec 16: The Madhesi Commission has removed Muslims and Tharus from the list of Madheshis. In the surname listing of ‘Surname Enumeration of Madheshi Community in Nepal -2078' conducted by the Madheshi Commission, Tharus in sub-group-1 and Muslims in sub-group-2 have been removed.

Sabita Dangol, deputy secretary of the Madheshi Commission issued a press release on Thursday and gave an explanation. Dangol said that the officials, including the president of the Tharu and Muslim commissions, publicly stated that the Tharu and Muslim communities have separate identities and civilizations and that it is not compatible with the Madheshi community.

According to the statement, various associations and organizations of the Tharu and Muslim communities had registered memorandums, petitions and complaints saying "We are not Madheshis, we have a separate civilization and identities" and to be removed from the list of Madheshis. Also, there was widespread protest when they were included in the Madheshi list.

Along with the Tharu and Muslim commissions, Tharu Sahitya Samaj, Tharu Kalyankarini Sabha and dozens of organizations had submitted petitions to the Madheshi Commission to remove Tharus and Muslims from the list of Madheshis. According to the chairman of the commission, Dr Bijay Kumar Datt, the concerned constitutional commissions have said that the Madheshi Commission made the decision after the concerned commissions said that they were not Madheshis.

The fact that the Madhesi Commission has removed Muslims and Tharus from the list of Madheshis has now become a topic of discussion in social networks.
