WFP tracks heartfelt moments of April earthquake

KATHMANDU, April 4: Moving Mountains, a seven-day photography exhibition organized by the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), is underway at the Siddartha Art Gallery at Babar Mahal in Kathmandu.

The event titled 'A one year retrospect of WFP earthquake response in Nepal' includes various moments of people and local scenario ravaged by the earthquake of April 25 last year and WFP's activities to support the quake victims.

According to the WFP, 108,650 people were provided with relief materials while 27,200 people were employed by paying US$ 419,300 as part of the remote access operations of the WFP after the devastating quake. Similarly, the humanitarian efforts of the WFP helped reconnect 130,000 people by opening the trails.

WFP/Samir Jung Thapa: WFP being the leading logistics organisation uses a wide variety of transportation services to ensure timely delivery of humanitarian cargo. WFP uses mules to transport humanitarian cargo to areas that are inaccessible to reach by air and road.


The remote access operations of the WFP rehabilitated and opened 888 kilometers of trails by working on 53 landslide areas in four districts through implementation of 354 project site activities and delivered 2,193 metric tons of humanitarian cargo on behalf of 22 organizations including WFP. In course of trail activities, it helped widen 63 trails, erect 226 gabion walls, rehabilitate 18 culverts for garbage, five bridges and causeways, and re-route 14 trails for safer passage.

WFP/Tina Stacey: A female porter carries corrugated iron sheets to be used for roofing houses. A total of 27,200 people were employed by RAO, which has provided USD 1,455,600 in wages.



The display of photos consists of these valuable moments and situations of the humanitarian activities of the WFP.

The exhibition, which started from April 2 and concludes on April 8, opens from 10 am to 6 pm every day.

WFP/Zoie Zones: At the end of December 2015, the WFP-led Logistics Cluster delivered 31,600 metric tons of lifesaving food, shelter, medicine and other supplies to 14 different earthquake-affected districts on behalf of 161 humanitarian organisatons.

WFP/Marco Frattini: WFP worked together with local mountaineering associations and expert international
mountaineers and geologists, to rehabilitate kilometres of Nepal’s damaged trekking trails.
