Speaking at the Ganesh-Ujjan Memorial Journalism Award ceremony in the capital, Sharma said people were not happy though the draft constitution has been made public after a long wait.Sharma urged Constituent Assembly members to welcome public feedback and make corrections in the draft accordingly. "It is being said that press freedom is curtailed in the proposed draft. On the other hand, it does not suit a democratic constitution to have a provision of parliamentary monitoring of constitutional bodies," said Sharma.
Sharma also expressed dissatisfaction over the provision of constituting the NHRC since the compulsory provision of appointing at least a woman member in the constitutional body has not been given continuity in the draft.
Sharma had awarded three journalists for their contribution in the field of justice and human rights. The Ganesh-Ujjan Memorial Trust has awarded Pabitra Sunar of Nagarik daily, sister publication of Republica, as well as Ghanashyam Khadka of Kantipur daily and Bal Kumar Nepal of Annapurna Post. The award carries a purse of Rs 11,111.
The trust is established in the memory of Ganesh Shrestha and Ujjan Shrestha, who were killed by a group led by UCPN (Maoist) leader Bal Krishna Dhungel in Okhaldhunga during the period of armed conflict. Though the Supreme Court had already convicted Dhungel in the murder case, he is still at large.
