SIRAHA, May 17: If a massive fire had not reduced a large settlement spreading over eight ward committees of Aurahi VDC in Siraha district two days ago, a wedding function would have been going on the courtyard of Nathuni Mahara´s house.

Villagers and relatives would have flocked Nathuni´s courtyard for the wedding ceremony of his daughter Savita. [break]

Just six days before Savita´s marriage, the fire wrecked havoc in Aurahi VDC, destroying around 3,000 houses and sheds, including Nathuni´s, and rendering over 850 families homeless.

For his daughter Savita´s marriage, Nathuni had borrowed Rs 200,000 and bought clothes and jewelries. He had also ordered for furniture. "Everything is over now," a grief-stricken Nathuni said. "I could not save anything."

Nathuni says the would-be groom will not wait for Savita. He needs to rebuild his house before marrying off his daughter. "Even if I manage to rebuild my house, who will lend me money for buying clothes and jewelries?" he said.
