KATHMANDU, Feb 28: Nepali Congress (NC) Spokesperson Prakash Sharan Mahat has claimed that the US-funded Millenium Challenge Corporation (MCC) compact agreement was ratified through parliament with the support of the main opposition party CPN-UML.

Speaking at a press conference at the party’s central office in Sanepa on Monday, Spokesperson Mahat said that the CPN-UML had informally assisted in getting the agreement approved by parliament due to political reasons. He also thanked the CPN-UML for its unofficial support in the ratification of MCC in a positive manner.

Stating that the MCC project was purely a development assistance, the spokesperson argued that it was not necessary to have a negative attitude toward the grant agreement. He also expressed the commitment of his party to move forward by resolving any misconceptions about MCC at the grassroots.

Spokesperson Mahat said that the money for the project would be spent on power transmission lines and road projects and that his party would focus on its implementation. He also said that the project has been passed by parliament and a new precedent has been set for foreign investment as per the needs of Nepal.
