NUWAKOT, Mar 23: A local level representative here has been convicted in the women trafficking case and handed a 37-year jail sentence.

The convict is Sun Bahadur Tamang, chair (ward) of Dupcheshwor Rural Municipality-1. He along with others two Wednesday were announced guilty in a case by the Nuwakot District Court. The bench was headed by District Judge Lokjung Shah.

He was slapped 37 years and six months in prison and a fine of 250,000. Other convicted in the case are Shukman Lama (32 years, three months and 23 days and fine of Rs 250,000) and Tikaram Tamang (30 years and a fine of Rs 250,000), according to court registrar Mahiman Singh Bista.

A group of survivors of women trafficking who returned from India on November 4, 2015 with the support from a social organisation, filed a case under the prevention and control of human trafficking and smuggling Act.

The Central Investigation Bureau of Nepal Police some months ago filed another case of same nature against Sun Bahadur Tamang at the Kathmandu District Court, but he was released on bail of Rs 500,000. RSS
