VS Niketan, Triton clinch titles

KATHMANDU, March 1: The boys´ team of VS Niketan and the girls´ team of Triton clinched the titles of the Whitehouse Cup (U-19) National Basketball Championship on Monday.



VS Niketan defeated Depot High School of Dharan 39-29 while Triton ousted Golden Gate 39-25 in their final matches at the covered hall of the Dasharath Stadium. [break]



Depot appeared helpless in the first quarter as VS Niketan scored 10 against nil. But they made a comeback with 14-4 in the second quarter to level the match. Depot lost the pace once again and went down 6-13 in the third quarter and 9-12 in the last quarter as they lost the match 29-39.



The highest scorer of the match, however, was Heman Rai of Depot who netted 16 points. Meanwhile, Nabin Pulami of VS Niketan who scored 12 points was adjudged the most-valuable player of the tournament.



In the girls´ category, Golden Gate took the lead in the first quarter with 10-8 against Triton. In the second quarter, Triton retorted with 15-9 in their favor. They maintained the lead in the low-scoring third quarter with 4-2 but went down 7-9 in the last quarter to win the match with an overall score of 39-25.







Neha Chaudhary of Golden Gate was the highest scorer of the match with 12 points while Samikchha Neupane contributed 10 points for Triton. Suchina Gurung of Triton was declared the most-valuable player.



The winning teams and the runners-up in both the boys´ and girls´ categories received Rs 25,000 and Rs 15,000, respectively. The most-valuable players bagged a purse of Rs 15,000 each.



Altogether 34 teams, including 11 girls´ teams, from around the country had participated in the tournament.
