ITAHARI, March 25: Cadres of five fringe political parties led by the CPN-Maoist tried to obstruct the voters´ registration campaign in Itahari of Sunsari district on Monday.

Police had to use force after the party cadres prevented election officials from updating the voters´ list. As a result, Itahari Municipality and its vicinity, where voters were being registered, remained tense for nearly half an hour. [break]Inspector Shyam Sharu Magar, chief of Area Police Office (APO), Itahari, said the cadres retreated after security personnel were deployed in large numbers.

Apart from the Mohan Baidya-led CPN-Maoist, Federal Limbuwan State Council (FLSC), the Matrika Yadav-led CPN (Maoist) and the Mani Thapa-led Revolutionary Communist Party had tried to capture documents and disrupt the voters´ registration campaign in Sunsari.

In Myagdi, CPN-Maoist cadres seized a laptop used by local election officials for voter registration. According to District Election Office, Baglung, a group of people who claimed to be CPN-Maoist cadres took away a laptop of Kabita Roka, who was deployed as an enumerator in Bhakimli VDC, on Monday night.

"After they seized the laptop, our campaign has been halted in Bhakimli VDC," said District Election Officer Kedar Paudel.

The fringe parties have vowed to disrupt the voters´ registration campaign, saying the major political parties took an unconstitutional decision to hold the CA polls.
