KATHMANDU, April 15: The Election Commission (EC) has started the registration and updating of voter lists in districts except Ilam and Bajhang where by-elections will be held. The EC had halted the voter registration process from February 26 for the by-election.

The EC has said that in Ilam and Bajhang, where the by-elections will be held, the registration and updating of the voter list will be started on May 7 from the provincial and district election offices like in the past.

Shaligram Sharma Paudel, spokesperson for the EC, said that a person residing in a district different from his permanent address due to profession, business or any other purpose can apply for registration through the pre-registration system along with the necessary evidence.

According to him, the process of collecting the voter lists in the outer districts has been continued as in the past by the provincial and district election offices, so that the name of the person applying in such a way remains at his permanent address.

The EC said that with the start of the updating of the voter lists, errors in the name, date of birth, citizenship details, father's name, mother's name, husband or wife's name, and polling station within the ward can be corrected.

Paudel said that the voter's list is subject to removal to rectify various discrepancies, including double entries, requests for citizenship relinquishment, annulments and removal of deceased individuals’ names. Additionally, if a voter’s name has been included in the list based on false information, complaints can be filed to address the issue.
