Vote-counting begins at midnight for NC prez

KATHMANDU, Sept 22: Counting of votes in the election for Nepali Congress (NC) president began at midnight Tuesday as party Central Election Committee officials and representatives of all three presidential candidates took a long time agreeing on a code of conduct and the criteria for determining valid votes.



The counting of votes cast for the top post in the country´s grand old party is still continuing. Earlier, the NC Central Election Committee had announced that vote counting would start at 8 p.m. [break]



According to the Election Committee, altogether 3,060 out of the total of 3,080 general convention representatives cast their ballots during the voting held between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. at Nepal Academy premises, Kamaladi.



The 20 general convention representatives who abstained from the voting Tuesday include the party´s founding leader, Krishna Prasad Bhattarai.



NC Acting President Sushil Koirala, Sher Bahadur Deuba and Bhim Bahadur Tamang are in the race for the post of party president. As per the NC statute, a presidential candidate must secure over 50 percent of the total vote cast to get elected to the coveted post.



The NC Central Election Committee has decided to conduct a run-off poll on Wednesday if none of the three candidates garners over 50 percent of the total vote cast. The candidate securing the least vote will be out of the race in the run-off.



Altogether 338 candidates are competing for various positions including party office-bearers and CWC members. Counting of votes for other positions including general secretary, treasurer and Central Working Committee (CWC) members will begin after the winner for the post of party president is declared.



Bimalendra Nidhi and Prakash Man Singh are contesting the post of general secretary from the Deuba and Koirala panels respectively. The third presidential candidate, Tamang, has chosen Narahari Acharya as his ´running mate´ for the post of general secretary.



Similarly, Chitra Lekha Yadav and Padma Narayan Chaudhari are contesting for treasurer from the Deuba and Koirala panels respectively.
