KATHMANDU, Oct 6: A man, who went viral on social media during the recent Gen Z protest in Kathmandu, has been arrested on a charge of murdering his own mother in Dhading.
The arrested has been identified as Yambahadur Kandel, 30, of Thapakateri of Tripurasundari Rural Municipality-3 in Dhading district. He allegedly beheaded his 55-year-old mother, Ram Maya, using a khuda—a large, sharp weapon traditionally used for butchering animals.
Superintendent of Police Bheshraj Rijal of the District Police Office, Dhading, said police reached the remote village after a two-hour ride from Dhading Besi. Upon arrival, they found the community members in a lockdown situation, with residents barricading themselves indoors out of fear that Yam Bahadur might target them as well.
Youth held for ‘murdering’ his mother
“The scene was horrifying,” SP Rijal said. “He was still holding the khuda and threatening to behead anyone who entered the house, including police and locals.”
Reportedly, it took police officers another hour to subdue him. He was found drenched in blood, with his mother’s headless body lying motionless on the floor.
Police said that Yam Bahadur repeatedly begged police to end his life. Police officials are still struggling to find out the motive or reason behind the killing.
Authorities have launched a full investigation to determine the motive behind the gruesome act.
Yam Bahadur drew public attention during the Gen Z protest in Kathmandu on September 8 and 9 after a video surfaced in which he confronted police, saying, “Please find the fear in my eyes. Sir, can you see fear in my eyes? Look here carefully.” The clip has since garnered thousands of views across social media platforms.
