According to District Police Chief Gyanendra Bikram Shah, the whole system of local governance has been rendered worthless with local bodies busy making arrangements for high-profile visits. As a result, the police have been unable to address sensitive security concerns. Shah said that crime control had been affected because security personnel had to be mobilized for the VIPs security.
Two passenger buses were looted in Tandi last week and the police was unable to reach the incident site on time. “What use is it if the police reaches the site hours after the incident,” said Keshav Dhakal, of Bharatpur Municipality-10.
Over the period between mid October to mid November, nearly one and a half dozen leaders visited the district, while over a dozen made their way through. A huge team of Maoist leaders, Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal, stayed in Chitwan for a fortnight in October. This was followed two different panels of CA members spending a week in connection with the national park dispute.
“We could as well have been slapped by the likes of Karima Begum, if we didn´t attend them (ministers),” said Chief District Officer (CDO) Maheshwar Neupane.
Neupane discussed the problem with the vice-chairman of Constituent Assembly Purna Kumari Subedi during her visit last week, who in turn assured him to take the issue to the government. “How can we work for the common people if we have to spend all the time attending to guests?” he lamented.
